Downward Trend In Newspaper Readership And Circulation Continues
The latest quarterly readership and circulation results show the downward slide continues in both as consumers move to digital news sources. Of the five Metropolitan papers only one has shown an increase in readership.
The Waikato Times is up 1,000 readers YOY to 82,000 readers, but it is still down from 87,000 readers in the last survey period.
For weekly papers the results are similar with all titles losing readers YOY.
In the Newspaper Liftout and Inserted Magazine category the results generally follow the “parent” paper. The one exception is Bite, gaining 8,000 readers YOY.
Although the overall YOY average issue readership for Auckland Community papers is down from 603,000 to 579,000, five of the papers managed YOY increases.
Circulation for all of the main papers is down, with the exception of the Herald on Sunday currently stable.

For advertisers, news papers remain a strong driver, particularly for retail and targetting more mature audiences.
Declining print readership is a global phenomenon through a generational change to sourcing information from digital platforms.
